Balaka District council has divulged that people in the district are at risk of being stricken by hunger for five months from November this year to March 2023.

The remarks have been made by district Relief and Rehabilitation Officer ,Blessings Kamtema during presentation in a full council meeting.
Kamtema says they are yet to commence Social Cash Transfer program from November which is targeting 21,000 households of various areas as a way to bail out them from the plight.
"We have put in place measures that would actually inform communities before we do the registration for them to understand the number of beneficiaries that we are going to reach as well as transfer amount that are going to be provided to the communities" Kamtema said.

Kamtema concluded by revealing that they have put in place stern measures to achieve transparency and accountability which among others are utilizing unified beneficiary registry, engaging communities, verifications as well as follow up with validations.
On his part Chairperson for Balaka District Council, Pharaoh Kambiri said the development is timely and he rushed out to disclose that currently many people in Balaka are only relying on mangoes as their daily food.
The program is being implemented by Find Your Feet with support from Irish Aid.
